Background of the study
Entrepreneurship education equips learners with the knowledge, skills, and mindset needed to launch and manage business ventures, driving economic growth and job creation (Umar, 2023). Academic libraries, as knowledge hubs, play a critical role in supporting entrepreneurship curricula by providing access to market research databases, business plan templates, and mentorship programs (Chima, 2024). Globally, universities with robust library support for entrepreneurship report higher startup success rates among graduates (Ng, 2025). In Nigeria, however, the integration of library services into entrepreneurship education remains uneven, with many academic libraries lacking specialized collections and digital tools (Adeyemi, 2024). In Birnin Kebbi LGA, where the demand for small and medium enterprise development is high, universities and polytechnics have begun offering entrepreneurship courses, yet the contribution of their libraries to these programs has not been systematically evaluated (Bello, 2025). Investigating how academic libraries support entrepreneurship education—including resource availability, training workshops, and industry partnerships—will inform strategies to enhance graduate employability and stimulate local economic development (Ibrahim, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Despite the proliferation of entrepreneurship courses in higher institutions within Birnin Kebbi LGA, student feedback indicates inadequate library support in terms of current business literature, access to online market databases, and practical training sessions (Abdullahi, 2024). Librarians often lack specialized training to curate entrepreneurship resources, and collaboration with business incubators is minimal (Ojo, 2025). These gaps may hinder students’ ability to develop viable business plans and access real‑world insights, undermining the effectiveness of entrepreneurship education. Without empirical appraisal of library roles and capacities, stakeholders cannot design targeted interventions to strengthen library contributions to entrepreneurial skill development.
Objectives of the study
To assess the availability and relevance of entrepreneurship resources in academic libraries in Birnin Kebbi LGA.
To evaluate the extent of library‑led training and industry partnership activities.
To recommend enhancements for library support of entrepreneurship education.
Research questions
What entrepreneurship resources and services are offered by academic libraries in Birnin Kebbi LGA?
How do library‑led activities influence students’ entrepreneurial competencies?
What strategies can improve library support for entrepreneurship education?
Significance of the study
The study offers insights for university administrators, librarians, and policymakers on optimizing academic library services to bolster entrepreneurship education. By identifying resource and training gaps, the research will guide the development of targeted collections, digital subscriptions, and partnership frameworks, ultimately enhancing graduates’ entrepreneurial readiness and contributing to local economic diversification.
Scope and limitations of the study
This appraisal is confined to academic libraries serving tertiary institutions in Birnin Kebbi LGA. It does not include public or special libraries. Limitations include potential non‑response from library staff and restricted access to internal usage statistics.
